The
Championship is the MG Car Club's one-make racing formula for all
versions of the MG Metro. Instigated back in 1992, the brainchild of
Steve Hall, the Championship continues to maintain it's initial
objective of providing an easy route into motor racing for potential
drivers with a limited budget. The Championship has also been
successful in bringing new blood to the MG Car Club over the years, as
at least 50% of its drivers were not previously members.
The
Championship attracts a cross section of drivers from those who have
raced successfully for several years to the first season novice. Some
do all their mechanical work themselves, whilst others do very little
of the work on their cars. However, without exception, the drivers are
always happy to discuss their cars and offer advice and help for
setting up and car preparation. An advantage of a one-make championship
is the wealth of specialist knowledge it fosters, and this is certainly
true of the MG Metro Cup.
Drayton
Manor Theme Park have been our sponsors for the past 12 years. This is
a family run concern and is one of the UK's top four leisure and theme
parks. Colin Bryan, the Managing Director of Drayton Manor Theme Park,
is as enthusiastic as ever in his support of the Championship. His son
George was one of our star drivers some years ago.
The
highlight of the 1998 season was the BBC Top Gear feature covering the
Championship and the entry of Tiff Needell in a Championship owned car
at the MG Car Club Silverstone meeting. This was the culmination of
much persistence and many long hours organisation by Alison Grooms, the
then Press Officer.
The
Championship is divided into three classes - Class A for standard MG
Metros, Class B for modified MG Metros and standard MG Metro Turbos and
Class C for MG Metro Turbos which previously ran in the 1993 BRDC
Roversport Club Metro Challenge. The Championship has recently expanded
to take in models of the Rover Metro/100, again in the three classes
and also runs an invitation class D, the purpose of which is to
introduce to the Championship drivers with cars which do not yet comply
with the class rules. The Championship has historically been contested
over between nine and twelve rounds per year and it attended all the MG
Car Club race meetings in 2007 plus Croft and Lydden Hill. In the past
we have travelled as far as Lydden Hill in Kent, Knockhill in Scotland,
Pembrey and Anglesey in Wales and Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire.
Committee
members and drivers attended the Brands Hatch “Race Car Live” event in
October 2006, providing a display car, photographs and information
sheets and also took a stand at Race Retro in early 2007. We produce a
“Beginners Guide to Motor Racing” giving tips and suggestions for
novice racers and copies may be obtained from the Championship
Co-ordinator, Jean Ellis, Goodwood, Green Lane, Woodhall Spa, Lincs
LN10 6QE or from the Registrar, Mark Bellamy, Madat House, Elsthorpe
Road, Stainfield, Nr Bourne, Lincs PE10 0RS. We also produce regular
newsletters and send out points tables after each round.
